Daytona: Tuesday notes 2002-02-12

Daytona Beach, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2002) - The True Value IROC series had a late day practice after NASCAR Truck qualifying. Indy Racing League champions, Sam Hornish, Jr., and Scott Sharp were joined by World of Outlaws champion, Danny Lasoski for a few circuits around the 2.5-mile, 33 degree banking.

Of his point in the learning curve Sam Hornish, Jr., said, "I'm starting to figure out what the air is doing around the car and how to work it." Stock car driving techniques concerning the draft are virtually the reverse of what they are in Indy cars.

Veteran series test driver, Jim Sauter had the pleasure of watching his son, Johnny Sauter, an up and coming NASCAR star, get a taste of the future when he took some laps in a True Value IROC car.

Johnny Sauter is the newest addition to Richard Childress Racing, filling the driver seat vacated by 2001 NASCAR Busch series champion, Kevin Harvick. If things goes as they have for the last two drivers of that RCR team, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Kevin Harvick, Sauter may find himself taking more than a novelty ride in an IROC car very soon.
