Charlotte 1994 recap

COCA-COLA 600, Concord, N.C. -- Jeff Gordon won the race - thanks in large part to crew chief Ray Everham's call for two tires on the race's final pit stop. In his Chevrolet, the 22-year-old Gordon started from the pole and beat Rusty Wallace to the finish line by a healthy 3.91 seconds. There was plenty of action to keep everyone's interest in the world's longest stock car race, but it was the final few laps that shook everything out. On lap 375 of 400, Wallace, the leader, pitted for gas and four tires. He was followed in by Ernie Irvan, Dale Jarrett and Geoff Bodine, who all did the same. Gordon waited until lap 381 to make his two-tire stop, and as a result, Gordon was in position to score the first victory of his young career. Following Gordon and Wallace to the checkered flag were Bodine. Jarrett and Irvan, who padded his lead in the standings to 62 over Dale Earnhardt. Earnhardt finished ninth after he sustained a cracked front nose-piece in a multicar mishap.
