JARRETT WINS FIRST BUSCH POLE IN QUALIFYING FOR DAYTONA 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Between Dale Jarrett and his father, two-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Ned Jarrett, they have won 37 poles for Winston Cup races.

On Saturday, Dale, the winner of the 1993 Daytona 500, won his career-first Busch Pole Award; and the duo's first superspeedway pole, when he captured the top starting spot for the Feb. 19 Daytona 500.

Jarrett turned a lap of the 2.5-mile speedway in 46.513 seconds, an average speed of 193.494 mph, in the Robert Yates Racing Texaco/Havoline Ford Thunderbird. He edged Dale Earnhardt by a scant .11-second margin, as the seven-time Winston Cup champion had a best lap of 46.524/193.449, in the Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Theirs were the only positions locked-in to the lineup for the $3 million-plus event. Two additional rounds of qualifying, on Monday and Tuesday, will complete the starting fields for Thursday's Gatorade Twin 125-Mile Qualifying Races for the Daytona 500.

Jarrett will start on the pole for the first race and Earnhardt on the pole for the second. The remainder of the starting field of up to 43 cars will be set after the Gatorade Twins.

On Saturday, defending Daytona 500 winner Sterling Marlin was clocked at 193.349 mph, good for third-quickest, in another Chevy. Rounding out the top five were Robert Pressley, 193.050 in another Chevy and Terry Labonte, 192.872 in yet another Monte Carlo. In all, Chevrolets occupied six of the top 10 spots.

Fifty-seven of the 64 cars currently in the garage area made qualifying attempts. One that did not was the #11 Lowe's Ford of driver Brett Bodine. In pre-qualifying inspection, an insert was found in the car's manifold that was not welded in place, as mandated by NASCAR rules.

NASCAR pulled the car out of the qualifying line and did not allow Bodine to make a qualifying attemp. After qualifying concluded, NASCAR announced that car owner Junior Johnson had been fined $45,000; and that crew chief Mike Beam was fined $100 and placed on indefinite probation.

Also on Saturday, the 43-car field for Sunday's Daytona ARCA 200 Bondo/Mar-Hyde Supercar Series race was filled in Racing Radios Second-Round Qualifying. 19-year-old Doug Reid III of Hueytown, Ala., posted the fastest speed, 188.569 mph, in the Long-Lewis Ford. The Daytona ARCA 200 will begin at 1:15 p.m., following the 16-car Busch Clash of '95, which is set to begin at noon.
