Defending race winner tops Bowles' K&N West mark

TOOELE, Utah -- Patrick Long picked up his second straight Coors Light Pole Award at Miller Motorsports Park Sunday in a record fashion. Long posted a lap around the 3.048-mile road course of 1 minute, 56.023 seconds (94.469 seconds) in qualifying for Sunday afternoon's Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts Bonus Challenge.

Long, who is also the defending race winner, eclipsed the qualifying record of 1:56.095 set by Jason Bowles in 2008. It is the third career pole for Long, a veteran road-course racer and a Porsche Factory Driver. He won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race earlier this year on the road course at Portland International Raceway.

David Mayhew qualified second, followed by Greg Pursley, Paulie Harraka, and road-racer Brandon Davis.

Eric Curran, whose team changed an engine following practice, was sixth quick. Luis Martinez Jr., points leader Eric Holmes, Jim Inglebright and Todd Souza rounded out the top 10.

Noted sports car driver Joao Barbosa, making his NASCAR debut, qualfied 13th.

The Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts Bonus Challenge is scheduled to go green at 3:40 p.m. MT.
