The George Snider Racing Team hopes to complete a "clean sweep" of the May Coors Light Silver Bullet Series events in Indianapolis when A.J. Foyt's True Value "Hulman Hundred" unfolds at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Friday night, May 25.
Ed Carpenter, who won the pole for last year's 100-miler on the 1-mile dirt oval then led 80 laps before mechanical problems forced him out of the race, returns in Snider's machine to try again for his initial Coors Light Silver Bullet victory. Mike Bliss drove one of Snider's machines to a convincing victory in last Saturday night's "Coca-Cola 100" at Indianapolis Raceway Park, an event in which Carpenter earned the "Hard Charger" award for his drive from 19th starting spot to sixth at the checkered flag. Carpenter is currently fifth in the series standings after four races.
Tony Elliott is the defending champion of the race but is not among the "top-10" in series points after just one "top-10" finish in the first four rounds of the 2001 campaign.
Russ Gamester, who leads the series standings with a pair of wins already under his belt, hopes to erase the memory of his 1997 run at the Fairgrounds when, after winning the pole and leading the first 26 laps, he slid into the outside wall in turn two and was out of competition. He holds a 41-point lead over Kasey Kahne and 42-point lead over Paul White going into the 100-miler.
Dave Darland, the 1997 series champion, also figured to be a top contender on May 25, having won back-to-back "Hulman Hundreds" in 1995 and 1996, but Johnny Parsons continues to hold the 1-lap track qualifying mark of 114.726 mph he set in 1995.
Practice at the Indiana State Fairgrounds gets under way at 4:30 pm, with qualifying beginning at 5:30. A 15-mile "qualifying race" at 7 precedes the 100-miler, which gets the green flag at 8. <pre> USAC COORS LIGHT SILVER BULLET SERIES STANDINGS
