- Nigel Mansell saves Peter Collins from drowning in the ocean off Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1981).

March 26 - The first Mille Miglia road race begins. It will be won, the next day, by Emilio Materassi at an average speed of 44 mph/71 kph (1927).

March 27 - Cale Yarborough born (1939).

March 28 - Rolla Vollstedt buys the first Offenhauser engine built for rear-engine application. It was put in the Bryant Heating Special which finished 15th in the Indianapolis 500 with Len Sutton at the wheel (1964).
