Button may join Porsche in the WEC

Reliable sources have hinted that Formula One World Champion Jenson Button has had talks with the Porsche LMP1 program in the WEC.

Following the footsteps of Mark Webber would be an interesting path for Button, who may be out of an F1 ride soon, courtesy of Fernando Alonso. 

Talking with BBC, Button's manager Richard Goddard was quoted as saying, "McLaren aren't sure what they're doing and what their line-up will be. That's pretty obvious."

"Jenson is still focused on F1 but would only want to be in one of the top teams so we're always open to talking to anyone," he added.

WEC is a 'formidable series'

Discussing the WEC, he referred to it as a 'formidable series that is gaining strength,' and rightly so. The WEC is rapidly catching Formula One in terms of popularity. In recent years, their LMP1 roster has doubled and continues to grow in terms of driver caliber and cars.

Although Button's specialty is open-wheel, he did make one lone start in the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps back in 1999, driving a BMW in the SP class.

Porsche in 2014

Webber's debut season with Porsche hasn't been anything spectacular, but he has managed to procure two podium finishes thus far. Porsche has yet to win a race since their return to the pinnacle of sports car racing this year.
