Flying Lizard Qualifies Fourth in GT2 for the 24 Heures du Mans
June 16, 2006--Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans, France--Flying Lizard driver Patrick Long qualified the team's No. 80 Porsche fourth in GT2 today for this weekend's 24 Heures du Mans race in Le Mans, France. Drivers Johannes van Overbeek, Seth Neiman, and Patrick Long will share driving duties during the 24-hour endurance race.
Starting positions for the 24 Heures du Mans are based on four 2-hour qualifying sessions held over the course of two days. A team's fastest lap time during the four sessions determines its starting position in class. In the first session of the second day (Thursday), Long completed a 4:05.266 on the 8-plus mile course.
Long commented on his qualifying run, "We lost some time in the second session because we did the engine change between the sessions tonight. It was a tradeoff between having more time on track and doing the engine change now, so we had time to adjust things if needed before race day. It's a long race and the last thing you want to do in a 24-hour race is to trade strategy for qualifying time. The car is good - very neutral and balanced. We are looking forward to the race."
The Flying Lizard GT2 team, from Sonoma, California, is back for their second consecutive 24 Heures du Mans, having finished 3rd in GT2 in 2005.
For the 2006 24 Heures du Mans, the team is sponsored by PortalPlayer, based in San Jose, Calif., a leading supplier of semiconductor, firmware and software solutions for personal media players and secondary display-enabled notebook computers. PortalPlayer is also a primary sponsor of the team for the 2006 the American Le Mans Series.
