Terry McCarl Has Surgery On Injured Left Leg

Altoona, Iowa -- May 26, 2006 -- A week after his left leg was injured at the conclusion of the $50,000 Challenge at Sharon Speedway, World of Outlaws Sprint Series driver Terry McCarl had surgery on Friday to help heal his broken left tibia.

Dr. Scott Neff inserted a plate and 12 screws into McCarl's leg in a surgery done in Des Moines. Despite the pain, the first thing McCarl asked after waking up from the procedure was, "Did they say how long until I can race?"

Dr. Neff told McCarl to take the recovery one week at a time to see how quickly McCarl's leg will heal.

Tim Shaffer, who drove the Big Game Treestands Eagle to a top-five finish on Wednesday in the Eckerd Outlaw Showdown at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway, is driving the car again Friday and Saturday at Williams Grove Speedway. On Friday night in the preliminary feature at Williams Grove, Shaffer turned the seventh fastest time of the 49 cars to go through time trials.

Following the Eckerd Outlaw Showdown on Wednesday night, McCarl's car is second in the championship standings, thanks in part to Shaffer's fourth-place run in the high-profile event. By World of Outlaws rule, McCarl will continue to earn 50 points on nights when full points are available to all teams.

"It was very weird to listen to the race with someone else driving our car, but Tim did a great job," Lori said. "Tim will be back on Saturday night at Williams Grove. Russ Hall will drive it Friday. A driver for the remainder of his recovery has not been determined yet."
