West McLaren Mercedes finished today's Austrian Grand Prix free practice session top of the time sheets. David Coulthard set the fastest time with 1:12.464 and completed 28 laps. Mika Hakkinen was second with 1:12.711 and he did 21 laps.

DAVID COULTHARD
'I had a satisfying and constructive free practice where we developed the car a lot. We look to be in good shape for another competitive weekend after having found a good set up for the car, and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's qualifying and Sunday's race.'

MIKA HAKKINEN
'The fuel pump on my car developed a problem at the beginning of this morning's session, which meant I lost some valuable time after I had to pull over after only half a lap. Fortunately we managed to get through a lot of work in the second session and I'm quite pleased with the balance.'

RON DENNIS
'A very good day for David, who systematically optimised his car with his engineers. Mika had his holiday extended by half a day when he experienced a mechanical fuel pump problem early in this morning's practice but he had a productive afternoon.'

NORBERT HAUG
'Mika only got a limited amount of running today due to a fuel pump failure in the first session but despite this he still managed to set the second fastest time in the second session. The fact that David achieved the fastest lap today demonstrates that the team and both drivers have found a good basis for the race.'
