Barcelona/Valencia testing 2002-11-28

Luca Badoer reasserted himself at the top of the times in Barcelona today, setting a fastest of 1.17.141. On the last day of testing for Ferrari at the Circuit de Catalunya Badoer completed a total of 82 laps with two different chassis, working on tyres and some new development parts. Ferrari was also on track at Mugello where Luciano Burti tested electronics.

Jaguar continued its mixed fortunes although it was Mark Webber who got the better of the R3 on the concluding day of team's test The Australian was second quickest behind Badoer and continued work on the new engine and gearbox. Fastest man yesterday, Antonio Pizzonia managed only 11 laps due to engine troubles and was bottom of the test times, over four seconds off the pace. To add insult to injury, Pizzonia then crashed and destroyed a Jaguar S-Type road car while on a demonstration drive -- luckily he was unhurt.

Toyota's Olivier Panis and Christiano da Matta were third and fifth, split by the BAR of test driver Anthony Davidson. Toyota also ended its scheduled test with unsettled results: Panis only managed 27 laps after a hydraulic leak caused a fire then gearbox problems ended his day. Da Matta had a productive 79 laps working on traction control and set up.

In Valencia McLaren continued to dominate, Kimi Raikkonen again at the top with a fastest of 1:10.664 with David Coulthard second quickest, just over a second behind. Three Williams' were on track: Juan Pablo Montoya the fastest of the trio, racking up whopping 137 laps, followed by tester Marc Gene and Vitantonio Liuzzi sixth fastest behind the Sauber of Nick Heidfeld.

Heidfeld concluded Sauber's three day test by gathering more data for the C22. Working on aerodynamics and tyres, the German set a time of 1.13.725 over 83 laps. Heidfeld and Head of Vehicle Engineering Jacky Eeckelaert were both happy with a successful test programme. Renault's Jarno Trulli in the development R202B chassis rounded up the times at Valencia today.
