The German clocked 1 min 17.506, with Villeneuve trailing less than half a second down on 1:17.829. France's Jean Alesi came in third in his Benneton, with Britain's Johnny Herbert gaining fourth place. Damon Hill finished a creditable ninth in his Arrows after crashing out of the day's first free practice.
