Button recalls accident

Jenson Button was disappointed not to race in yesterday's Monaco Grand Prix but took the medical advice given by doctors at the Princess Grace hospital and by Professor Sid Watkins. The BAR driver was not seriously hurt in Saturday's 180mph crash at the harbour chicane but it was a heavy enough impact that it was deemed better for him to not to take part in the race.

"All I remember is spinning lots and hitting the wall very hard," said a healthy looking Button on Sunday morning. "I think I hit the right wall first on braking. There was a bollard sticking out and I clipped it with a wheel. That sent me spinning across and I hit the other wall. I was actually quite lucky because it hit in the middle of the car and that took a lot of force out of it. I did black out for a little while."

"I'm not hurt. I have lots of aches but I'm not hurt too bad. My only problem is my knee, which is not working in the joint too well. I was unconscious when I crashed and I was not making much sense speaking afterwards. But then again that's quite normal!"

Button, obviously, wanted to race and Watkins would have let him but advised him not to. Sensibly, Jenson took the advice, albeit reluctantly. "I wanted to be out there driving," he said. Looking bemused when asked why, Button gave the only possible answer: "I'm a racing driver, that's what I do."
