Ecclestone denies British backtrack

Bernie Ecclestone is not impressed with Jackie Stewart's claim that he backtracked on his promise of the British Grand Prix being safe for the next two years. Formula One Management recently released a statement saying it had not guaranteed the Silverstone race, only that an offer to any prospective promoter had been made, which has yet to be accepted.

The British Racing Drivers' Club retaliated with a statement in which Stewart claimed Ecclestone had backtracked on "assurances of the security of the 2005/2006 Grand Prix".

Ecclestone has taken offense at the accusation. "He (Stewart) had better be careful. I don't backtrack on what I say," he said, according to the Daily Express. "That is not how I run a successful business. Anybody who says that sort of thing about me is wrong."

Bernie's annoyance may lead to Sir Jackie sporting a new fashion with his tartan attire: "When I see Stewart I will wrap that kilt round his head," Ecclestone warned.

"I told him yesterday very clearly what is expected of the BRDC," Ecclestone added. "They need to get their act together and quickly. They have until the end of September. It can hardly be a surprise to them for I have told them all along what is required. To run a race you need a promoter and they don't have one."

The debate over the British GP appears no closer to resolution than before, but for the immediate future let's hope Stewart does not follow the Scottish tradition of being 'au naturelle' under his kilt.
