Irvine thinks title a foregone conclusion

Eddie Irvine thinks that this year's championship is a forgone conclusion with Ferrari and Michael Schumacher already seeming so dominant. Schumacher has said that the title fight is still wide open but Irvine believes that it will be tough for anyone to beat the current champion. The Jaguar driver said Michelin had to produce the best tyres but Bridgestone, which Ferrari use, have come back strong in the tyre war.

"The championship is a foregone conclusion," said Irvine. "But then it always was going to be unless Michelin could produce a tyre that is much better than Bridgestone, but Bridgestone have come back big-time. I still think Michelin have the overall advantage under dry conditions but it is not big enough to wipe out the Ferrari-Schumacher effect. It won't be good for the show if Schumacher keeps on winning but it will be great the day someone beats him. That will be a bigger show than if he got beaten every weekend."

"It is boring at the moment but Michael could screw up quite easily this weekend and storm through the grid and finish second. You never know with F1. Normally Barcelona is a disaster of a race but we will have to wait and see. It is going to be tough for anyone to beat Ferrari and Michael because Ferrari are not going to build a bad enough car for Michael to get beaten."

Ferrari opened the Spanish Grand Prix weekend with a 1-2 in first free practice and many think it will be a boring race. Teams test at the Circuit de Catalunya regularly, drivers are used to the track and the race is generally considered one of the less interesting ones on the calendar.
