Mansell leaves McLaren, to be replaced by Blundell

Following extensive and open discussions, Marlboro McLaren Mercedes and Nigel Mansell have decided to end their current Formula One agreement. The suspension of the relationship follows two disappointing races at Imola and Barcelona for Nigel and the team.

Commenting on this decision, McLaren International Managing Director Ron Dennis said: "The performance of the 1995 Formula One car, MP4/10, has not met the expectations of both parties so far this year. Nigel has not felt confident within the car, and this has affected his ability to commit fully to the programme. In these circumstances, I believe that we have determined the most appropriate course of action. The relationship has been short, and has obviously not achieved the results anticipated by either party. However, I have found Nigel to be entirely straightforward and totally professional in his business conduct. Whilst this decision brings to an end our current relationship, I would certainly not preclude us working together in the future."

Nigel expressed regret in respect to the decision to stand down, but said: "I am obviously disappointed that the relationship with McLaren and Mercedes which could have achieved so much has been concluded early. At this stage of my career I had expected, on joining McLaren, that the total package would have given me the possibility to be competitive with the other top teams. I have certainly enjoyed many aspects of my relationship with the team and working with them has been a unique experience. They are undoubtedly building a future which will, I am sure, be successful in the long term. I have no immediate plans in Formula One but have welcomed the opportunity to keep in touch with the team, with whom I have parted on the best possible terms."

Marlboro McLaren Mercedes will continue its extensive development of the MP4/10 and the Mercedes-Benz FO110 engine, and the second Marlboro McLaren Mercedes seat will be occupied by Mark Blundell at the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend.
