McNish racing to win

Former Toyota driver Allan McNish would rather drive in a different racing series and win than stay in Formula One and be uncompetitive. Eddie Irvine said recently he thinks he has unfinished business in F1 and McNish feels the same -- but the Scot looks more likely to be heading to America than finding an F1 drive.

With only two race seats left -- one at Minardi and one at Jordan, neither of which McNish appears to be in contention for -- it seems a test role would be all that was available. However, despite some top F1 teams reportedly interested in the Scot's services in a testing capacity, McNish is aiming for something more than a behind-the-scenes position.

"I want to stay in F1 but only if the circumstances are right," he told the Daily Telegraph newspaper. "You can be there simply for the sake of being there even if you're not competitive. But I want to race to win, not because it's fun to drive fast. I'd prefer to win in another category of racing rather than stay in F1 just for the glamour or whatever. Also, at this stage of my career I would be taking a risk joining Minardi, for example, with the possibility of not moving on up from there.

"I've got some big decisions to make because I've also been testing with Penske, the Ferrari of US motor racing, for the new IRL circuit which will effectively replace CART in 2003. It's always been an ambition of mine to race in the Indianapolis 500 in front of half a million spectators."

"I've won Le Mans, I've raced in the Monaco Grand Prix, and the Indy 500 is the last of the great theatres I have yet to appear in. That said, I feel I still have some unfinished business in F1."
