No action against Montoya

Stewards at the British Grand Prix ruled that no action was necessary against McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya after Red Bull's David Coulthard claimed the Colombian had blocked him in qualifying and demanded a review of the incident. Coulthard was one of the drivers to be dropped out after the middle session and he accused Montoya of deliberately holding him up.

"Obviously I'm disappointed with what happened with Montoya," the Scot said after qualifying. "He obviously made a mistake on his flying lap and then, in trying to make me pay for his pain, he drove slowly round the end of the lap before I could start mine."

The alleged incident went mostly unseen, as the track screens and television broadcasts failed to pick it up, save for Coulthard's agitated fist waving in the aftermath.

McLaren team principal Ron Dennis claimed they were unaware of any altercation. He pointed out that earlier in the day Coulthard was in "forgive and forget" mode for Michael Schumacher's Monaco incident but once the Scot himself was involved, it was a different story.

"I'm surprised at David's outburst," Dennis told reporters at Silverstone. "One minute he's leading a charge on 'we have to be supportive of everybody and everybody makes mistakes' and yet a few hours later he's got a contrary opinion when it affects him."

The stewards examined the evidence and concluded Montoya was not guilty of any misdemeanour. "The stewards, after hearing the explanation of both drivers, heard from the respective competitors' team managers, considered the data evidence and time sheets produced decided that the matter requires no further action," read a statement.
