Raikkonen says outqualifying Vettel irrelevant

Kimi Raikkonen says having qualified in front of teammate Sebastian Vettel on merit for the first time in 2015 does not make up for a disappointing qualifying for Ferrari in the British Grand Prix.

The Finn had only started in front of the German once this year, but only after Vettel had hit trouble in Q1 in Canada.

Today, Raikkonen was fifth while Vettel finished in sixth.

Given their positions, however, Raikkonen admitted it did not make a difference to him.

"I'm not happy about it. It doesn't make me any more happy," said Raikkonen.

"If we are fifth or sixth I don't care if he's in front of me if we are in these positions.

"It would make a difference if we were P1 and P2, but it doesn't make me happier to be in front him in the positions that we are."

Raikkonen, who qualified behind the two Williams, said third place could have been possible had he put all his best sectors together.

"If I had managed to put all my sectors together we'd probably be in third or something, but we did our best and obviously is a bit disappointing to be where we are in fifth. We'll try to do better tomorrow."

Teammate Vettel said he had made a mistake during his final flying lap, but admitted Ferrari was simply not fast enough today.

"They [the Williams] are difficult to pass, so let's see what happens tomorrow. Our race pace is good but the strategy will be difficult tomorrow," Vettel said.

"In the end what it comes down to is I made a mistake on the final lap and we were not quick enough."
