Team Sauber Petronas continued its preparations for the start of the 2002 FIA Formula 1 World Championship today by starting a three-day test at the Valencia track in Spain. Nick Heidfeld set the fastest time of 1m 13.720s while covering 90 laps. Felipe Massa was second quickest (1m.13.923s) having recorded 92 laps.

Willy Rampf (Technical Director): "We had two separate programmes for the drivers today, with Nick doing more development work in setting up the car in a number of different configurations, and Felipe concentrating on a long distance run to get the feel for his first Grand Prix. It's been a good day, and the Sauber Petronas C21 has been quick and reliable."

Nick Heidfeld: "I mainly concentrated on set-up work today, and I'm very satisfied with the way the car went. We've had a good test today."

Felipe Massa: "My role was to complete another Grand Prix distance for the second time of my career, and it went well. I'm getting used to it and my fitness is fully up to the task."
