Larson, who was fastest in Friday’s practice and appeared to win the pole for Sunday’s Overton’s 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, had his qualifying time disallowed by NASCAR after his No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet failed post-qualifying inspection.

NASCAR officials found Larson’s rear deck-lid fin was outside specifications.

Larson will now start the race from the rear of the field and the pole is awarded to Martin Truex Jr., his first of the season and 13th of his career.

“Not the way we wanted to get our first pole of the year but looking forward to getting the first pit stall,” Truex said in a statement Friday night.

Jimmie Johnson will now start second, Matt Kenseth third, Larson’s teammate, Jamie McMurray, fourth and Kasey Kahne will line up fifth.

Rounding out the top 12: Erik Jones, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott and Kevin Harvick.

This is the second consecutive race Larson will start from the rear of the field. He started last at Kentucky Speedway last weekend failing to clear pre-qualifying inspection.

Larson finished second in the race but penalized by NASCAR this week after it discovered an unapproved rear brake-duct cooling system on his No. 42 Chevrolet.

No other penalties for the current infraction are anticipated.
