Joilet, Ill-- Penske driver Ryan Newman scored his second Bud Pole Award of the season, the third of his career, for Sunday's race at Chicagoland. Newman sped his Ford Taurus around the 1.5 mile track in 29.500 seconds, a speed of 183.051 mph.
"We had a really good lap. The second one I think I had a little more speed but I couldn't hold it. I pretty much like this place. It's been good to us and we've been good to it."
The 2002 rookie contender scored the Busch Series pole last year at Chicagoland and nearly won the race before colliding into Mike McLaughlin with three laps remaining.
"Hopefully we can stay up front for 400 miles. That's what it's all about. You've got to have good pit stops, track position, and be there at the end."
Roush Racing's highest qualifier is second year driver Kurt Busch in the No. 97 Ford. Busch will start alongside Newman in row one. The second best time from Busch was a fast lap turned at 182.593 mph.
Veteran Evernham Motorsports driver bill Elliott was the highest showing for a Dodge. Elliott will start Sunday's event third. Alongside Elliott will be current points leader, Ganassi driver Sterling Marlin, in fourth.
Daytona winner Michael Waltrip enters Chicago with high momentum, he rounds out the top five in his DEI Chevy. Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 20 driver had the opposite outcome from Waltrip at Daytona. While Waltrip won, Tony Stewart only ran two laps before being knocked out of the 400 mile event under the lights due to an accident.
The No. 77 Ford piloted by Dave Blaney will start seventh. Blaney was involved in a wreck with pole-sitter Newman last week with less than five laps remaining.
Newman's Penske teammate, veteran Rusty Wallace will start eighth. DEI driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., will roll off the grid ninth. Joe Nemechek who took the hardest hit last week at Daytona, rebounds with a solid starting spot in tenth.
21-year old Stuart Kirby put his No. 57 solidly in the field with a 26th place qualifying run. Kirby will make only his second Cup start on Sunday.
47 cars attempted to make the race, sending the cars of Bill Davis driver Scott Wimmer, BAM driver Ron Hornaday, BACE Motorsports' Tony Raines and Kirk Shelmerdine back to the haulers.
