Makela Dominates Opening Formula Ford Race
Valle Makela dominated round seven of the UK Formula Ford Championship at Snetterton in Norfolk this morning (June 6). The Finn picked up his fifth win of the season ahead of a superb drive by American Charlie Kimball.
Makela made a bad start and allowed Sweden's Sebastian Hohenthal to pull alongside in the run to the first corner. Makela managed to hold onto the lead but Hohenthal suddenly came under attack from Kimball, who had made a blistering start from sixth on the grid.
Kimball was quick to put a move on Hohenthal and dived up the inside of him at the chicane on lap three. The battle behind allowed Makela to pull away and eventually crossed the line almost five seconds clear of the chasing pack.
"I got a bad start but once I got into a rhythm it was easy for me. The oil down at the first corner might be a problem later in the day as no-one is using that line; I made sure I stayed away from it but it might not be as easy later. We'll see what happens this afternoon," said Makela.
The battle for second took a turn on lap nine when Yuya Sakamoto ran wide at the first corner and made contact with Hohenthal, dropping him to sixth place. This allowed Kimball some breathing space and meant that Suk Sandher inherited third place.
The championship is scheduled to continue this afternoon at 4:30pm.
