MCNALLY LAPS UP THE TOWNSVILLE CROWD IN V8 UTES
Glenn McNally kicked off his Townsville V8 Utes event today with 8th in qualifying and 7th in race 1 in front of a huge crowd at the North Queensland circuit.
Thursday saw McNally and his V8 Utes competitors participate in a street parade and autograph session to kick off the event for the first time in this part of the country.
Practice on Thursday was Glenn's first look at the circuit from behind the wheel of his West Coast Racing Commodore ute and by the end of the session the West Australian was 16th fastest.
"It was good to get out there and see the track properly today," Glenn said.
"I knew that I had a lot more in me for qualifying so the fact that I was 16th didn't really bother me.
Qualifying this morning saw Glenn ended up eighth fastest in the session which gave him the top-ten position he was looking at for the start of race 1.
Race 1 saw Glenn gain a position in the first lap before the race came under Safety Car control for a large part of the remaining laps.
With 3 laps remaining the race was finally re-commenced and Glenn held his position to finish the race in 7th place.
"It was a shame we didn't really get a full race out there but 7th place was a good result for us today and it keeps us in contention for the rest of the weekend."
Glenn will start from position 10 in tomorrow morning's reverse-top-16 race.
"I just have to get past as many of the guys in front of me before coming under pressure from the guys behind.
"If I can repeat the result from Darwin (2nd) I will be a happy man."
Glenn has the final two races of the round tomorrow.
