Former champions rise to top of American Le Mans points
BRASELTON, Ga. - With two races in the 2003 American Le Mans Series season completed, some familiar faces have taken their places on top of the driver championship point standings for the professional sports car racing series.
In three of the four classes of competition within the series, the drivers who won their respective driving championships in 2003 are back on top of the point standings following Sunday's Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta at Road Atlanta.
The LMP (Prototype) 900 class features a wide-open race for the driving championship this year because none of the four previous champions is scheduled to run the full series this year. After two races, there is a three-way tie for the point lead among Frank Biela and Marco Werner of Germany, co-drivers for Infineon Team Joest, and JJ Lehto of Finland, driver for ADT Champion Racing. Lehto and Johnny Herbert scored the overall race win at Road Atlanta.
In the LMP 675 class, defending series champion Jon Field of Dublin, Ohio, class winner and third-place overall finisher in the Road Atlanta event with the Intersport racing Lola EX257-MG, leads the driver standings along with co-driver Duncan Dayton of North Salem, N.Y. Third place, only three points behind, is Chris Dyson of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., driver of the Dyson Racing Lola-MG.
The four full-season drivers for Corvette Racing are tied for the lead in the GTS class driver standings after having split the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and the Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta race wins. Defending series champion Ron Fellows of Canada and his co-driver, Johnny O'Connell of Flowery Branch, Ga., are tied with Road Atlanta race winners Oliver Gavin of England and Kelly Collins of Corona del Mar, Calif.
Lucas Luhr and Sascha Maassen of Germany, co-champions in the GT class in 2002, are back on top of the class driving championship again this year after finishing first and second in the two races held this season. They hold an eight-point lead over their Alex Job Racing Porsche teammates Timo Bernhard and Jorg Bergmeister, winners of the Road Atlanta event.
The next race for the American Le Mans Series will be July 25-27 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
