Blomqvist's DTM season "almost laughable" so far

BMW driver Tom Blomqvist has dubbed the start to his third season in the DTM as an “absolute nightmare” and “almost laughable” after further misfortune at the Hungaroring.

Blomqvist has yet to finish higher than 12th five races into the campaign, despite having started all but one of them in the top 10.

He was spun by Wickens in the Hockenheim season opener, damaged his car in a safety car restart tussle in that weekend's second race, was hit by Paul di Resta in the Saturday race at Lausitzring and, after having qualified second on Sunday, was penalised for a jump-start, which he attributed to a clutch issue.

The first race of the Hungaroring weekend was written off after contact with BMW stablemate Maxime Martin, who Blomqvist said had apologised for the incident afterwards.

“It's been an absolute nightmare,” Blomqvist told Motorsport.com. “It's almost laughable now, it's becoming funny.

“I think I have a target on the car or something because three out of five races I've been turned around by someone else. “

The Anglo-Swede, who was a race winner in his rookie DTM campaign in 2015 and finished sixth overall last year, sits 16th in the standings, with only two points to his name, awarded for qualifying second at the Lausitzring.

I don't know, we need to catch a break," he added. "I'm qualifying almost inside the top 10 every single race and I have, like, no points.

“It is really a frustrating season - hopefully we'll get some luck at some point.”

Blomqvist is hopeful an adjustment to the performance weights for Sunday's track action will give himself and BMW a better chance of taking the fight to the Audis, which have dominated the Hungaroring weekend in terms of pure pace so far.

“We were always hoping that we were going to be okay here but obviously the Audis are on another planet," he said.

“Hopefully tomorrow, when we lose 10 kilos delta difference with Audi - it won't be enough to put us ahead of them but hopefully it will be a bit better.”
