BMW motorsport director Gerhard Berger says Williams still has its sights set on second place in the Constructors' championship. Berger said the team is not only aiming to beat McLaren but to narrow the gap between themselves and Ferrari. The next, and last, four races of the season he thinks the circuits will suit Williams and show their power.
"Now we have to tackle the remaining four races fully concentrated," Berger said. "We still train our sight on the second place in the constructors' championship. To achieve that goal would be a great success for our young team in our third year after our comeback to the Formula 1 -- and a further improvement compared to our third place last year. And in trying so we don't want to be overtaken by McLaren at the finish line.""On the contrary: We don't want to increase the difference towards our competitors only, but also to reduce that towards Ferrari. And we could achieve both goals, for the following circuits suit us well. I assume that we can demonstrate our BMW power again in two weeks in Spa-Francorchamps as well as in Monza, Indianapolis, and Suzuka."
After the dominant Ferrari, Williams do seem to be the best of the rest. A strong, if slightly erratic season, has put the team second in the standings, twenty six points ahead of McLaren. With four races to go, there is still a chance for McLaren to overtake but it would take a vast improvement in the Woking squad to do so.
