BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen has voiced the same opinion as Michael Schumacher and Williams technical director Patrick Head; that the championship fight will go all the way to the last race. Theissen expects Williams, Ferrari and McLaren to battle it out for both the Driver's and Constructors' title right up to Suzuka in six races time.
Williams' and BMW's hard work since the beginning of the season has been paying off recently and Theissen is happy with the progress: "Quite obviously we've done the right steps", he said, "and our hard work is bearing fruit now. Such a situation is much more rewarding of course than an unexpected and accidental success."
"A big compliment to our partner WilliamsF1, particularly concerning the areas aerodynamics and set-up. There have been made many minor steps that have brought major progress. In the past months they have done a really fantastic job in Grove. And I have to praise our tyre partner Michelin as well."
Williams and BMW recently signed a continuance of their partnership deal until 2009 and BMW intends to have more input to development of the car, rather than just be an engine partner. Theissen hopes this will strengthen the performance of the team as a whole for the future.
"Up to now our 'only' task was to develop and build the engines and to use them at the circuits," he explained. "But in the future we are going to develop the complete power transmissions -- gearbox and differential -- together."
"To do this we will use man power and other resources like computer capacities, test stands and simulation tools too. This will be of benefit for our future development program."
