Juan Pablo Montoya hit the top of the times at Jerez for the second day in a row in the new Williams FW26, the time of 1:16.650 just two hundredths off his fastest of yesterday. Team tester Marc Gen? took the second spot in the FW25, nearly half a second down on his teammate. Montoya was 1:234 faster than the best non-Williams, the Renault of test driver Franck Montagny in third.

"The team's had another constructive session at Jerez today with Juan Pablo recording the fastest time of the test again in the FW26," said Williams chief operations engineer Sam Michael.

"With the FW26, we've concentrated on optimising mechanical and aerodynamic set up options while Marc has continued with the intensive tyre testing programme using the FW25B. The new car seems to be responding positively so we're making good progress."

Montagny was just one hundredth ahead of Renault teammate Jarno Trulli, who was fourth quickest. The work of the day for the pair was tyres, Montagny testing constructions and Trulli focusing on compounds. Toyota test driver Ricardo Zonta was fifth fastest and teammate Olivier Panis ninth.

McLaren had two MP4-19s on track, tester Pedro de la Rosa sixth and David Coulthard bottom of the times in tenth, the Scot suffering a suspected hydraulic leak and only completing 17 laps. Ferrari continued with the test driver duo of Felipe Massa and Luca Badoer, seventh and eighth respectively. The pair focused on an electronics and tyre programme.
