Schumacher targeting both titles

Michael Schumacher is, obviously, well aware that he only needs to score one point at the season finale in Japan to secure his sixth World Drivers' Championship but he wants the Constructors' for Ferrari as well. The German doesn't believe title challengers McLaren and Williams, for the Drivers' and Constructors' respectively, have any reason to join forces against the Scuderia as they have different aims.

"Sport is unpredictable, but this is just part of the game," Schumacher told reporters as he left the Mugello track in Italy on Friday after a team briefing. "As to the rest, this time the new points system seems make things easier: I only need one point so it is enough to finish eighth."

In regard to the possibility of a sixth title he said: "I repeat what I have always said: first I will try to win it and then I will speak about it. I don't think that Williams and McLaren will work together against us as they have different objectives: Williams want the constructors' title and McLaren the drivers' -- and we want both."

It's long been speculated that Schumacher may retire if he secures his sixth championship but his manager, Willi Weber, says Michael will not bow out until his contract with Ferrari expires in 2006.

"You can put that one in the realm of fairy tales, there's nothing to it," said Weber in regard to Schumacher quitting in the near future. "Ferrari has to think about what will happen next when Schumacher's contract runs out in 2006, that Michael will retire (then) is pretty certain."
