Webber discusses accidents

Mark Webber's had his fair share of thrills and spills duriing his career as a top level motorsport driver. Accepting the dangers of the sport and preparing yourself accordingly are part and parcel of any driver's job but, as Webber says, there are certain circumstances that you can't legislate for.

"As a Formula One driver, you are conditioned to prepare for the unexpected as just about anything can happen in a race situation. The British Grand Prix was a perfect example of something completely unexpected happening but a lunatic running onto the circuit is one situation you really can't legislate for."

"Someone quoted me as saying that for a moment I thought it was the end, but I'm not quite sure I said it like that. It was actually all over in a blur and there really wasn't a lot of time to react to where he was."

"As a racing driver you prepare yourself for a lot of different circumstances on race day but never for something like that. I think it's totally unfair on the drivers. Of course, the consequences would be far worse for him if he was hit, except maybe if you were to hit him head on. But we're well protected in our little environment and drivers are able to walk away from huge impacts now."

"If anyone just clipped that guy, however, he would be sent flying up into the air and the consequences don't bare thinking about. I just hope we don't ever see anything like that happening again."

"I've been involved in some quite big accidents in the past -- at Le Mans, in F3000 and in Formula One. Some accidents are due to driver error and some when something breaks on the car and you are a complete passenger, as was the case in Le Mans. The important thing is to understand the implications of an accident, come out of the other side knowing why it happened and make sure it doesn't happen again."

"Jenson didn't know an awful lot about what happened in Monaco as he was in the tyre barrier before he had time to think but with my accident in Brazil there was a lot more run off area and I was able to evaluate what went wrong."
