Williams front row for Canadian GP

It's a Williams front row for the Canadian Grand Prix, Ralf Schumacher's second consecutive pole position leading teammate Juan Pablo Montoya. Ralf was half a second clear of Ferrari's Michael Schumacher in third and Spanish youngster Fernando Alonso a confident fourth. The Williams' were the only cars to get into the 1:15 zone, Ralf's pole a 1:15.529 and Montoya just under four tenths behind.

Jacques Villenueve started the proceedings in front of his home crowd with a 1:17.347 for BAR but was swiftly eclipsed by Renault's Jarno Trulli, who clocked 1:16.718 . Giancarlo Fisichella was next up, slower than his compatriot and a trip across the grass put him third, over a second off the pace.

Jaguar's Antonio Pizzonia was down in the first sector but picked up in the second to slot in behind Trulli, half a second off. Toyota's Cristiano da Matta completed the first group and took second from Pizzonia by half a second.

Ralf Schumacher started the second group with a very fast first sector and followed it through to take provisional pole with 1:15.529, the first into the 1:15 bracket. Giancarlo Fisichella could only manage sixth for Jordan and Jenson Button a poor seventh for BAR.

Justin Wilson could do no better than eighth on his flyer, three seconds off pole in the Minardi, but Juan Pablo Montoya was just three tenths behind Williams teammate Ralf to slot into second. Jos Verstappen was slower than Wilson in the first sector but improved to post seventh quickest -- ahead of Button and Fisichella!

Olivier Panis kicked off the third group and set a very good third fastest, just over a second off pole for Toyota. Mark Webber had the fastest first sector of all and followed it through to take third from Panis. McLaren's David Coulthard could only produce a disappointing seventh, which he immediately lost to Sauber's Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

Championship leader Kimi Raikkonen started the final group but a trip across the grass caused him to abort his lap, which means he will start from the back of the grid tomorrow. Renault's Fernando Alonso set the fastest first sector but lost out slightly, managing third fastest, half a second from pole. Ralph Firman made a mistake early in his lap and posted a time in the mid 1:18s for sixteenth in the Jordan.

Sauber's Nick Heidfeld was just two tenths down in the first sector but dropped to eight tenths in the second, posting tenth. The Ferraris were the last out, Michael Schumacher slotting into third and Rubens Barrichello had an untidy lap that produced fifth.

An all Williams front row for the Canadian Grand Prix and Ralf's second pole position in a row. Ferrari and McLaren couldn't produce the goods when needed but a very good fourth for Renault's Alonso. An interesting prospect for tomorrow's race, with Webber lurking in sixth and a great seventh for Panis.

A worthy mention to Verstappen, fifteenth ahead of Fisichella, Button, Wilson and Firman. Final top eight classification: R. Schumacher, Montoya, M. Schumacher, Alonso, Barrichello, Webber, Panis, Trulli.
