Singhania holds off Prinoth, Duyver takes Coppa Shell title
Gautam Singhania held off Erich Prinoth for the opening win of the Ferrari Finali Mondiali weekend at Mugello, as Jacques Duyver sealed the Ferrari Challenge Europe Coppa Shell title.
Singhania and Prinoth were locked in a tense duel for the entire 30-minute race, as Prinoth passed Duyver at the start and immediately began to pressurise poleman Singhania.
The gap between the two protagonists ebbed and flowed, never growing to more than a second, with Singhania soaking up the pressure to claim his first Coppa Shell win of 2015 by just 0.242s.
But, with Duyver arriving at Mugello with a 40 point advantage, the Belgian was never likely to be denied the title, duly sealing the crown with third in class after a late pass on Christian Kinch.
Duyver was however denied a spot on the overall podium by the charging Gregory Romanelli, who despite being fastest in qualifying was forced to charge through from the middle of the pack – the North American field starting behind the Coppa Shell runners.
Romanelli was a long way clear of his nearest rival in the North America series, John Farano, and was able to gain major ground on points leader Emmanuel Assasis, who was an early retirement.
Third among the North American contingent was John Weiland, who was best of the NA Trofeo Pirelli Am runners, with Chris Cagnazzi taking honours in the NA Coppa Shell division.
