Barcelona GP3: Hughes leads Jorg in all-DAMS front row

DAMS locked out the front row for its debut GP3 race, as Jake Hughes grabbed pole on his first outing in the series ahead of teammate Kevin Jorg.

With conditions much improved compared to Friday’s free practice session, times tumbled throughout the 30-minute session, with most of the best laps coming inside the final five minutes.

At the start of his second run, Jorg deposed halfway leader Jack Aitken from the top spot with a 1m35.216s, but this was soon beaten by the ART machines of Nirei Fukuzumi and Charles Leclerc, who became the first to dip into the 1m34s with a 1m34.939s.

But, just as the ART duo came to the fore, DAMS responded emphatically as Hughes grabbed the top spot with a 1m34.632s, some three tenths faster than Leclerc.

Jorg then made a late improvement in the final two minutes with a time 0.140s slower than teammate and fellow Formula Renault graduate Hughes, making it an all-DAMS front row.

Leclerc and Fukuzumi swept the second row for ART, with Jake Dennis leading the Arden charge in fifth and making it an all-rookie top five.

Oscar Tunjo and Antonio Fuoco went sixth and seventh with a pair of last-gasp improvements, while Alex Albon, Ralph Boschung and Aitken – who was baulked on a hot lap – made up the top 10.

In DAMS’ third entry, Haas development driver Santino Ferrucci struggled to a lowly 18th place, although his problems were less severe than those of Alex Palou, who will start from the back after mechanical problems brought his session to an early end.
