Fields Set for Tomorrow's "Grand Prix of Miami," "Kia 200"
GAINSCO takes Rolex pole, Miami-based Rum Bum nets Continental top spot MIAMI--This afternoon, Jon Fogarty took a first step towards GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing's goal of finally taking the checkered flag at Homestead-Miami Speedway, capturing the pole position for Saturday's "Grand Prix of Miami" (12 p.m.) in Race 2 of the 2011 GRAND-AM campaign.
Coming out on top of a highly competitive qualifying session, Fogarty captured his record-extending 17th career pole position in a Daytona Prototype with a lap of 1:13.655 (112.416 mph) in the No.99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Chevrolet/Riley, co-driven by Alex Gurney. He will be joined on the front row by Memo Rojas, seeking his fifth consecutive GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series victory in the No.01 TELMEX BMW/Riley, co-driven by Scott Pruett. The top seven DPs were separated by less than one second; the top six all featured different engine-chassis combinations.
"We want to put this place to rest--we want to win here--and this is a good start," Fogarty said. "Our engineers made good calls between our last practice and [qualifying]....We have a good race car."
During qualifying for Saturday's GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge "Kia 200" (4:15 p.m.), Nick Longhi gave Miami-based Rum Bum Racing a head start towards extending its three-race winning streak, winning the pole position with a lap of 1:25.994 (96.286 mph) in the No.13 BMW M3, co-driven by Matt Plumb.
"This team is a machine," Longhi said after capturing his second consecutive pole. "It's not as easy as it looks, and I'd be crazy to believe that some luck isn't involved. We are running our butts off."
Adult tickets for Saturday's "Grand Prix of Miami" and "Kia 200" are $25, and kids 12 & under are FREE. In addition, all tickets (adult and children) include paddock access, parking is FREE, and fans are welcome to bring in their own food and drink in coolers measuring as large as 14x14x14 (with unlimited re-entry to the Speedway to allow for restocking from tailgates). The GRAND-AM Rolex Racing Sports Car Series returns to South Florida's 2.3-mile road course to feature the Daytona Prototypes and Grand Touring classes in Race 2 of the 2011 GRAND-AM campaign.
