The race kicked off just past 10am, local time with Extreme Speed Motorsports leading the No. 55 Mazda Racing prototype.
The first full-course yellow was needed after just 30 minutes of racing when BAR1 Motorsports' Johnny Mowlem got hooked by another PC car and went head-on into the armco just before the bus stop chicane. He was battling for second in class with the Race Performance entry and emerged from the wreck unhurt.
On the ensuing restart, the No. 55 Mazda spun down in Turn 1 with assistance from a Corvette DP. The team has rebounded nicely and is running third at the time of writing this.
The No. 5 Action Express team emerged as a serious contender and led for some time. However, just before Hour 3 came to an end, Pipo Derani overtook Action Express and put ESM back on top.
However, ESM had a dreadful pit stop as the halfway point was crossed, losing control of the race. But it remains close with the No. 55 Mazda leading the Corvette DPs of Action Express (No. 5), Wayne Taylor Racing (No. 10), VisitFlorida.com (No. 90), Action Express (No. 31) and then ESM's No. 2 Ligier.
PC
Outside of Mowlem's massive crash, things have been fairly calm in PC. At halfway, CORE Autosport encountered some problems, spinning and then losing a wheel over the course of a couple laps. Starworks and Race Performance have traded the lead back-and-forth with the latter currently holding the advantage.
GTLM
GTLM has been too close to call all day with several different teams spending time out front. But over the last hour or so, RLL Racing has solidified their place at the top of the class with the No. 25. They certainly haven't driven away though with the Ford GTs, AF Corse and Scuderia Corsa all in the hunt.
GTD
In GTD, Stevenson Motorsports (No. 6) battled Turner Motorsport (No. 96) early for the lead but after solidly taking control, a left rear tire failure put them down the running order. Adding insult to injury, the cut tire problem persisted.
