Team Xtreme could not find a sponsor for the 2002 season and is shutting the doors. Does that mean they will not make a comeback if something surfaces -- probably not. Airton Dare has been released from his contract.

The first signs of problems for the team was announced at Pikes Peak in June when they could no longer field a two-car operation; Jaques Lazier

Team Xtreme's problems continued when John Lopes, team general manager left for a position at Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) prior to the end of the 2001 season.

The Indy Racing League's 2000 Rookie-of-Year Dare signed with Team Xtreme after finishing 10th in the 1999 Indy Lights series. Last season, the Brazilian finished 10th in the IRL overall points.

At the beginning of the off-season, the team moved their headquarters from Rockwall, Texas to Phoenix, Arizona to offset some to their costs while seeking a sponsor for the team. Former sponsor 1-800 BAR-NONE did not have the funds to continue the sponsorship for 2002.

With most seats taken for the 2002 IRL season, 23-year-old Dare may have to sit out the season; however other opportunities may open-up in other openwheel series.
