MotoGP racer Alex de Angelis – who suffered serious injuries at Motegi last month – has returned to the paddock in Valencia this weekend, and targeted a return to the series next year.

IodaRacing Team rider de Angelis received a head injury, back fractures and a lung contusion in his crash, and was treated in a Japanese hospital for two weeks before being flown home to San Marino.

“You see me, I’m walking, I’m smiling, it’s quite incredible,” de Angelis told BT Sport. “It’s quite impressive, even the doctors are looking at me saying, ‘Alex, what are you doing?’ I am OK, I am walking without feeling too much pain.

“I came here to Valencia because so many people were talking not so good about me, so I wanted to show them I’m smiling, I’m OK. Of course, I’m not 100 percent, but I can return to 100 percent in very few days.”

Rehabilitation plan

De Angelis is now focusing on recovering completely from his injuries, which had at one stage appeared life-threatening.

He will now undergo a therapy plan to build his fitness ahead of next season, as his prognosis is a full recovery.

“When I go home after Valencia I will try to do some physiotherapy in the water for one week,” he said. “And after this week, we will decide what we do next.

“What they say that’s incredible is that in one month I can resort completely back to my normal life, which is really nice.

“It means for sure in February I can ride a bike.”
