Monday May 22, 2000: Barrie Ontario’s Al Turner ended the first weekend on the CASCAR Super Series 2000 tour with a win in the Mopar 250. Turner and his #76 Blue Streak Intrepid racing team started the race from a provisional 34th starting position and made all the right moves to be in the winner’s circle at the end.

Qualifying on Saturday started out on the wrong foot when Turner crashed the car into the wall during time trials. They experienced further problems during the heat race when the car overheated from damage sustained earlier. Turner was forced into taking a provisional that was earned based on 1999’s points.

The Blue Streak Intrepid managed to stay out of trouble all day and Turner saved the tires and brakes for the end run. A blistering pit stop saw them gain additional track position during a mid-race caution. Turner moved patiently through the pack and took over the lead from Edmonton’s Kevin Dowler on lap 223. A hard charging Don Thomson in the Home Hardware Chevrolet made for an exciting finish.

A jubilant Turner did a victory dance on the roof of his car and was later quoted as saying “I cannot tell you how much this means to myself, my family and my entire team who worked so hard again last night putting the car back together. We wanted this win not only as the first for Turner Motorsports as team owners but most especially for Blue Streak, Rick Decher and the people who support us from Daimler Chrysler and Peel Chrysler. This is an incredible moment and we want to thank all our supporters for helping to get us here.”

It was especially thrilling for Turner to win this Mopar event, as it was the inaugural race for their 2000 Intrepid.

The next event on the schedule for Al Turner and the #76 Blue Streak Racing Team is the Ford Quality Care 250 at Cayuga Speedway Sunday June 4th.
