Darlington to upgrade facilities to improve fan experience

On Wednesday, Darlington Raceway unveiled its plans for ‘A Better Darlington…The Tradition Continues’ to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the Track Too Tough to Tame.
The project will include an overhaul of the track’s Tyler, Wallace and Colvin Grandstands providing a better fan experience for the Bojangle’s Southern 500 on Sept. 1-2.
“Darlington Raceway and its parent company, International Speedway Corporation, are committed to providing a best in class guest experience for our fans when they attend our NASCAR events,” said Kerry Tharp, Darlington Raceway President. “This investment in our facility further achieves that goal and solidifies our place as the Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR.”
As the Darlington prepares for its Seven Decades of NASCAR celebration, improvements will be made to the pitch of the Tyler Tower Grandstands to offer better sightlines on the front stretch along with stadium-type seating complete with cup holders.
Bench-style seats will replace the current metal seats in the Wallace Grandstand and wider bench seats with upgraded concession and restrooms will highlight the upgrades for the Colvin Grandstands on the backstretch. Darlington will also add multiple cross-over gates to be installed along the frontstretch, for easier access to the infield.
To commemorate the anniversary Darlington will erect a Wall of Honor along the bottom of the Wallace and Colvin Grandstands to recognize former race champions.
“Darlington Raceway is appreciative of the support Governor Henry McMaster, the state of South Carolina, its political leadership, and the city and county provide our venue,” said Tharp. “We are proud to be South Carolina’s home track and we’re confident that this capital improvement project will elevate our ability to host a premier sporting event that will benefit our state and our region for many years to come.”
