Richard Petty Motorsports to bring back the No. 44
What’s old is new again at Richard Petty Motorsports.
On Monday, RPM will officially unveil the No. 44 Ford as the car Brian Scott will pilot for 2016. The No. 44 replaces the No. 9 Ford which RPM inherited through its merger with Gillett-Evernham Motorsports after 2008.
Petty Enterprises first raced the No. 44 in the Grand National Series on March 28, 1954 at Oglethorpe Speedway, Savannah, Georgia with Bob Wellborn behind the wheel. Jim Pascal and Maurice Petty drove the No. 44 in 1960. Rick Wilson ran the number in 1993 after Richard Petty retired the No. 43 for a season.
Kyle Petty won the 1979 ARCA race at Daytona in the No. 44, which happened to be Kyle’s first start. While he raced a few numbers in his career Kyle always felt his “family number” was 44
In 1997, the No. 44 returned with Kyle Petty on his own equipment and followed him to Petty Enterprises in 1999 as he returned to the home team. As a tribute to his son Adam, who passed away in an accident at New Hampshire, Kyle Petty took over the No. 45 in 2000.
The unveiling of the No. 44 Ford comes on the heels of the Ford Performance’s new NASCAR Fusion.
RPM announced at the end of last year Scott would drive the second entry in the Sprint Cup Series. Scott, who turns 28 on Tuesday, has six full seasons of Xfinity Series experience and 17 Cup starts with a career-best finish of 13th at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Scott also earned a pole at Talladega Superspeedway in 2014.
