Munich, 6th February 2011. Following Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica's (PL) bad accident in the "Ronde di Andora Rally", the thoughts of everyone at BMW Motorsport are with the Polish driver, who competed for the BMW Sauber F1 Team between 2006 and 2009, and hope for his speedy and complete recovery.
"The news of Robert Kubica's accident was a shock to me personally and the entire BMW Motorsport team,"said BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen. "We had a long association with him and shared some great moments during that time. Robert made his Formula 1 debut with us. Together we celebrated many successes, with the highlight being his win in Montreal in 2008, which was also a one-two for the team. At the same location a year earlier we learnt how dangerous motor racing could be when Robert had a terrible accident. Thankfully he was able to leave hospital very soon after the accident and continued his successful racing career. We are now thinking of him and wish him a speedy and complete recovery."
Kubica kicked off his F1 career as the Friday test driver for the BMW Sauber F1 Team in the 2006 season. At the Hungaroring (HU) he celebrated his debut as a regular GP driver for the team on the 6th August 2006. Just a month later he scored his maiden podium result by finishing third in the Italian Grand Prix. Up to the end of the 2009 season, he added a further eight podiums for the BMW Sauber F1 Team, including victory in the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal (CA) on 8th June 2008.
