Hamilton edges Rosberg for Singapore Grand Prix pole

Lewis Hamilton has secured his sixth pole of 2014 and the 37th of his career. In the final seconds of qualifying, he edged his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg by just seven thousandths.

They were followed by their closest title rival with Daniel Ricciardo placing third. He will share the second row with his Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel. Fernando Alonso, who paced FP1 and FP3, only managed fifth.

Felipe Massa, Kimi Raikkonen, Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen, and Daniil Kvyat filled out the remainder of the top ten. All three sessions went without incident, but there was plenty of action nonetheless.

Q1

The usual suspects in Marcus Ericsson, Max Chilton, Jules Bianchi, Kamui Kobayashi, Pastor Maldonado, and Adrian Sutil were eliminated. Kimi Raikkonen topped his very first session of 2014, leading the way for Maranello in Q1.

Q2

Q2 saw McLaren's Jenson Button lose out, joining Romain Grosjean, Sergio Perez, EstebanGutierrez, Jean-Eric Vergne, and Nico Hulkenberg on the sidelines. Mercedes went 1-2, foreshadowing what was to come, just not quite the order it would end in.

Q3

Williams rebounded from a dreadful performance in practice and put Felipe Massa at the top for the first portion of the pole-deciding round. The deck was shuffled once everyone came in for a fresh set of tyres with about four and a half minutes remaining. 

Daniel Ricciardo rocketed to the top and the crowd erupted in cheers. Nico Rosberg lashed back though, taking control. His reign at the top was short-lived however as Hamilton came around and ousted his title rival.

When told the result over the radio, a disappointed Rosberg shouted "Damn it!"
