Clint Bowyer promises to take more risks to win races

Clint Bowyer has admitted his consistent approach to the NASCAR Sprint Cup has to change this year if he’s going to win his first title.

Bowyer, who finished 19^th in last year’s point standings with Michael Waltrip Racing, has failed to win a race at the top level for the past two seasons.

After finishing runner-up in the points race in 2012 – after he ran a hugely consistent season – Bowyer now admits the recent format change to the Chase means he has adapt to its ‘win-at-all-costs’ mantra.

“What kind of got me derailed last year was not buying into that winning deal last year,” Bowyer told reporters in Daytona this morning. “I thought that my same approach of being consistent once you’re in the Chase will win you the championship. And it about did, a couple of times.

“But I’m pretty much over that now. You need to go and win a race. It’s been a long time for me. Making the chase isn’t acceptable any more, we need to win a race to be valid in this sport. And it’s been too long.”

Ask a silly question…

Bowyer was then asked, ‘What are you going to do to achieve that?’

He deadpanned: “I’m going to hold the steering wheel tighter.”

Nice to see his sense of humour hasn’t changed!
