Words with Cam Waters: Charging Home
Supercars star and Motorsport.com columnist Cam Waters capped off a solid weekend in Townsville with a charging finish to take sixth on Sunday. Here’s his thoughts on how it all went down.

Townsville was a good weekend for us, really. It was exactly the sort of weekend I was looking for, a consistent weekend where I was able to finish everything and head home with a nice clean car.
Saturday was a little bit frustrating; I was running 12th and holding off Craig Lowndes, which was really cool. But the late Safety Car hurt me, one car got by and then the freight train followed through. I ended up back in 16th.
This is a business of swings and roundabouts, though. On Sunday the Safety Car helped me a little bit. We were running eighth, cruising behind James Courtney, and the guys made a great strategy call when the Safety Car came out late to bring me in and put some new tyres on.
That helped me charge through to sixth, which was a really good result. A few more laps, and it could have been a podium as well.
It’s a real balancing act when you end up in a situation where you’ve got better car performance than the guys in front of you, but only a few laps to get past them. I probably could have been a little bit more aggressive and tried to stay on James’s tail, but I really wanted to prioritise keeping the car clean and straight. That’s okay, it’s all experience. I didn’t want to take too many risks.
It was a good solid weekend. I’ve still got work on my qualifying performances, but we’re heading in the right direction.
It was particularly good to have a weekend like that on the back of Darwin – which was probably my worst weekend so far. So to back it up with a solid performance like that was really good.
Hopefully we can build on that at Queensland Raceway next time out. That’s a circuit I was really, really quick at in the Dunlop Series last season, so I’m looking forward to seeing if we can do something similar this time around.
