Robbie Gordon wins the off-road Heavy Metal Challenge, the final
motorsports event held at Riverside International Raceway in California,
USA (1988).
August 15
Elio de Angelis, driving a Lotus 91, wins the Austrian Grand Prix on he
Osterreichring by less than 1/10th of a second over Keke Rosberg in a
Williams FW08. First F1 victory for de Angelis and 72nd and final win for
Lotus under the direction of Colin Chapman (1982).
August 16
Richard Petty drives a Chevrolet Monte Carlo to victory in NASCAR Winston
Cup race at Dover, Deleware, USA (1979).
August 17
Porsche begins wind tunnel testing of the 956 at the University of
Stuttgart's Institute for Driver and Motor Vehicle Research in West Germany
(1981).

Fred Woodward drives an Alfa Romeo to victory in the first race ever held
