August 8
Ludovico Scarfiotti, driving a Ferrari, wins the sports prototype hillclimb at Schauinsland, Germany. The Up-to-2-Liter class is won by Gerhard Mitter in a Porsche Bergspyder (1965).

August 9
Nelson Piquet, driving a Williams-Honda FW11B, wins the Hungarian Grand Prix on the Hungaroring (1987).

August 10
The first three Wolsit race cars, made in England, are delivered to Italy where they will race (1907).

August 11
The TWR Jaguar XJR-6 makes its race debut in the 1000 km World Endurance Championship race at Mosport, Ontario, Canada. Manfred Winklehock suffers fatal injuries in the crash of his 962 during the race which is won by Derek Bell and Hans Stuck driving a Rothmans Porsche 962 (1985).

August 12
Carroll Shelby drives a Ferrari 410 Sport to victory in the Seafair Race in Seattle, Washington, USA (1956).

August 13
Pre-WWII racing legend Tazio Nuvolari is buried in Mantua, Italy, in his yellow shirt and leather helmet he wore while racing. His pall bearers are Alberto Ascari, Pietro Ghersi, Gigi Velloresi, Juan Fangio, Giovanni Bracco, Gino Valenzano, Renzo Castagneto, Umberto Maglioli, and Learco Guerra (1953).

August 14
Stefan Johansson destroys his McLaren but is unhurt after hitting a deer at nearly 180 mph during practice for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Oesterreichring (1987).
