Button wants to beat everyone

Jenson Button claims he's not interested in the No.1 British driver title that some have been pinning on him lately; he wants to beat everyone, not just his compatriots. With Renault being in a position to fight with some of the bigger teams Button has proved last year's critics wrong by scoring points at three races of the five this year. Now the criticisms are turning into accolades as Button scraps with the likes of McLaren and much is being made of the 'battle of the Brits'.

"Becoming the No1 British driver does not interest me," Button states. "I want to be in a situation where I can beat everyone. I came into Formula One confident I could eventually become world champion; that is still my belief and my ambition. At the moment, it is unlikely we can be ahead of the Ferraris but we are constantly making progress with our car. And, unlike last season, I now turn up at races not thinking about whether I can score a point but how many it is going to be."

Button commented back in Brazil that he thought Renault would be in a position to challenge McLaren within a few races and so far he seems to be right. In the Spanish Grand Prix Button and team mate Jarno Trulli were running in the top six, with Button ahead of David Coulthard, until both Renaults retired due to mechanical problems. Coulthard, whom the pundits have as Button's main rival to be top Brit has said he doesn't know what all the fuss is about and he also is not interested in simply being the top British driver. Like Button, and everyone else, he wants to be champion.
