Schumacher supporting Imola

2004 could be the last San Marino Grand Prix as new countries vie to host events, and older circuits struggle to match the impressive facilities boasted by new tracks such as Bahrain. Like Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix, Bernie Ecclestone wants Imola to undergo major upgrades to guarantee its place on the calendar.

Italy currently has two races; as Monza is the home of the Italian Grand Prix it is Imola that is first in line to be dropped from the schedule. As it's one of Ferrari's home races, and as he is Ambassador for San Marino, Michael Schumacher naturally wants the Imola race to stay.

"It's sort of a home Grand Prix for me, being the ambassador of San Marino," he said at today's FIA press conference. "It's good to come here. Obviously, we all know about the rumours about the future of the San Marino Grand Prix. So from my side I hope that they don't come true. If I can do anything then I will try. But I think there is very little in my hands to do."

Turkey is one of the favourites to replace Imola on next year's calendar if indeed the San Marino GP disappears. The Herman Tilke designed Turkish track, near Instanbul, is currently two months ahead of schedule and should be completed in time for next season.
