Four Zytek-engined Prototypes to Start at Le Mans
One LMP1 and three LMP2s on the grid
The four Zytek-engined teams competing in the Le Mans 24-hour race all completed qualifying yesterday and now look forward to this weekend's round-the clock contest. With one of the car entered in the LMP1 class, the other three in LMP2, the quartet finished 18th, 21st, 25th and 29th overall in a highly competitive field of 56.
Up against a hoard of factory entered diesel cars and with two of its drivers both Le Mans and night-racing rookies (part of qualifying understandably takes place in the dark), the history-making LMP1 Beechdean Mansell Motorsport Ginetta-Zytek 09SB did well to finish 18th overall with a time of 3m 897s. Neither 1992 Formula One World Champion, Nigel Mansell, nor his younger son Greg have raced at La Sarthe circuit before, while his elder son Leo has only competed here in a GT2 car.
Fourth quickest in the LMP2 class is one of the favourites for honours in this category, the Quifel-ASM Ginetta-Zytek 09SB. Its rapid lead driver, Frenchman Olivier Pla set a time of 3m 40.532s. The reigning Le Mans Series LMP2 champions are regulars at Le Mans and plan to use their experience of the race to move further up the field and onto a podium position by Sunday afternoon. Olivier is joined in the driver line-up by Miguel Amaral and Warren Hughes.
The second Ginetta-Zytek LMP2 car, the Team Bruichladdich car that finished second in its class here in 2007 finished fourth in class. Karim Ojjeh, whose family owns the car, used his experience of the circuit to set a time of 3m 51.189. Karim will share the driving with Tim Greaves and Gary Chalandon.
The third LMP2 Zytek-engine car in the class is the WR-Zytek LMP2008 of veteran Le Mans entrant Gerald Welter. This WR, which is making its Le Mans debut, finished qualifying 11th in this competitive class with a time of 3m 53.109s. The drivers are Tristan Gommendy and the Salini brothers, Philippe and Stephane.
The 2010 running of the Le Mans race, which has been held regularly since 1923, starts tomorrow, Saturday June 12 at 3.00pm local time.
